Christmas went well

My mom and Charlie, taking a break from Christmas cooking.

Mischief and mayhem enjoying a holiday feast.

The human's version of the meal.

Gathering together (my side of the family).

Me and my husband at Protestant Christmas Eve service (church of the highlands).

Charlie and me resting after the festivities. We have been in a partially hibernated state since the 26th. At least he's cozy! I got to go to Catholic Mass yesterday, and wouldn't have been able to without support from my parents and sister. Thanks again!

Happy holidays, everyone!

Vet checkup today

But first, we got some encouragement to fortify us!
A lovely card from our local knit and crochet group! Thank you! Charlie keeps licking your card. Something tells me it smells a little bit like the "grandma" that sent it! :)

Handmade gluten free treats!!! Thank you Janet!

Charlie heartily approves!!!!

Janet also made the awesome card. If you'd like to cheer somebody up like she did, her cards can be acquired at: Janet's Papercrafts, jaskotnicki@yahoo.com! I assure you they are high quality, and very classy. She's even been featured in magazines. (Please support your local artists!)

Charlie is still recovering

He doesn't want to play (we would have to play quietly, to avoid his heart rate going up), and I'm still having to wake him up for meals. His back doesn't seem to be bothering him like it was, which is great.

Thank you for your continued good hope for him!

About Charlie and Beth

Beth: "My life changed for the better when a humane society staff member said 'If you got a minute, I have a dog I think would be a great dog to visit hospitals and stuff. His name's Charlie. I'll be right back!'"

Charlie: "I was so happy to get out of my cage with my buddy. He seemed so happy that I was happy to follow him. So many dogs around here are pushy and yank on that rope that humans put on us, but I was just happy to follow him. He always has nice things in store for me. Even with I was sick with the crud everyone there was sick with, he loved on me and talked to me. When I didn't feel like eating he would stay with me and pet me until I felt better. We walked out past everyone and into the lobby where a lady with a weird stick was sitting with an older lady who looks and sounds just like her. They smell a little different, and I think the older lady was a little nervous at first to meet me, but the younger lady seemed to cheer up a little when I reached out to smell her. We went into a little room with a cat tree and a coke machine and got to know each other better. I peed on the tree so everyone would know I got into the room, and we sat and talked for a couple of hours. She kept asking me if I wanted to be her dog. I didn't want to go home with my old people anymore, so I kissed her and wagged my tail. She tried to pinch my paw a little, and pull on my mouth to see my teeth. I have pretty teeth, and she didn't hurt me so I just waited to see what she would do next. She stood up and banged her weird stick on the floor and dropped it. I looked at her to see if she was crazy, but didn't say anything. There was a really loud banging on the door, so I turned to look, and realized it was my friend checking on me to see if these people were nice to me. I think the ladies were shocked at how quiet I am. Maybe that's a good thing, because I'm not staying in the cage anymore! I'm going to be Charlie Majors - and learn how to help my new human every day!"

Beth: "Charlie and I started our journey together in December of 2013. Through extensive training, he has overcome food aggression, and fear of the car. He has learned basic obedience and also service dog tasks. He has become someone I trust with my life every single day! He helps me from the smallest tasks like picking things off the floor, to helping me do the shopping and laundry."

Merry holiday swapaganza!

My beautiful friends on ravelry and I decided to do swap boxes for the holidays, since we all celebrate different things, and we all need to watch our budgets.

Here's what I got:

(First off, awesome tape!)

OMG, they're handmade!!! Aren't they the cutest?!?

Charlie sniffing the gorgeous tiedied stocking, next to his "Sunday Best" supplies bag. It's my favorite color!!! Thank you!

This yarn is so soft, and smells delicious! It came with a pattern made just for it especially!

I found some curry chocolate and ginger chocolate hiding in the toe of the stocking!!!! After devouring half the bar, I've decided ginger and chocolate is the best chocolate in the world. :D

That's not the last of it either, she filled up every inch of the box:
She made all these gorgeous snowflakes, with the tiniest stitches I've ever seen! They must have taken all year to make!!!!

THANK YOU, S/babyfirefly!!!!
I'm blown away by the love you sent me.
Happy holidays!!!!!

Charlie starts treatment in the morning.

I don't care if anyone cares about me, or sits in judgement of me. Just please care about Charlie and pray for him that his treatment will go without incident, and he will be fully healed.

He is my bridge back into society as my service animal, my best friend and my "baby" when off duty.

Thank you.

An early Christmas!

On an early day of Christmas, my sister gave to me:
Some earrings and a cup from Germany!

On the next day of Christmas, my best friend gave to me:
A zebra cowl to support my EDS!

On the next day of Christmas, my SIL presented me
With a crochet Bible tote and scarf to keep me warm!

Then the mailman rang my doorbell, and said
"Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!"

What's this? My other best friend/sister sent me a surprise!
What could it be?!?!

A knit cap, and the worlds best notepad, with a sweet handmade card.

Thank you guys!!!!! You're way too generous and sweet!!! Merry Christmas!!!!!

Just a reminder

We've decided on treatment

We got a second opinion yesterday, and we are going with that vet.

He was very patient and professional in sorting out the mess the other vets created. Charlie had been prescribed minocycline, which is an antibiotic! He took them from me and we threw them away. The doc gave us a DVD to borrow and learn about his condition, gave us statistics of how many cases he treats on average, showed us where the injections would happen and even told Charlie he was a good dog. (Acknowledging the owner and patient in the room! Whoa! Good job, doc!)

Treatment begins on Monday, they will observe him until I get him in the afternoon, I will bring him home and watch him through the night, and repeat that on Tuesday. He will have to be kept very quiet and calm for 3 weeks, off duty (because his back will be sore from the injections). In April he will be retested for heart worms (price included in Mondays treatment).

We found a good vet.

Waiting to hear from the vet

Mayhem has been hovering near Charlie ever since his checkup. He tested positive for heart worms. He is on medication morning and night and has been removed from duty until he is completely well.

The vet said there was no sign of them multiplying, that we may have caught it at a very early stage. He exhibits no outward symptoms.

We will know more by Tuesday.

Art imitating life

I decided to lay down in Stormwind City (world of warcraft) and my companion animal stood over "me". Looks like when I pass out and Charlie tries to make me come around.

Big hero 6

We went to the movies today! For the first time in a year. Steve planned out our whole afternoon including dinner and the movie.

Charlie has never been to a theatre or even that part of town, so he was anxious. We got chickfila, and of course had minor celebrity status when Charlie did his job and carried my food bag out. It's always a little bit of shock when I hear the reaction we get for that, because it's honestly gotten to the point where I kinda zone out and think of his mouth as an extension of my grasp. Like, my left hand has my cane, my right hand has his hard bridge handle and that should be a dance enough to help stay upright, but then life demands a tempo change and I have to deal with my wallet, holding a drink and getting through two sets of glass doors. I'm so busy getting it done that I can't understand in the moment why there's a clamor. Oh. It's because the shiny coated 110lbs dog is carrying my dinner sack. Gotcha. ;)

It was fall like weather, and I checked the ground temp before we decided to eat outside. He was snug as a bug in a rug, I promise.

Steve and I had a good time. It was so nice to have a date and emotionally connect a bit. I didn't realize how stressed I've been.

So we get to the movies, and I've figured out a new way to rig his small bed. I roll it up, cinch a belt around it, hook it to an old over the shoulder purse strap and voila! It's on my back and I can't feel it. We've rigged it that way for game night a few times, and it's been very effective. I wish I had someone to pick their brain about how they deal with all the gear that is needed. He has a dog version of a diaper bag, but I don't know. I'm digressing, sorry.

Alright, I've got my cane, his bed, his bridge handle. (I left his bag behind in the car) He's got my wallet, his wallet, and I lost sight of Steve. I decide to go inside, and the only question I'm asked is "what's your dogs name?"
....I struggle with this question, because if I tell them, 90% of the time the first thing someone will do is use his name to try and talk to or distract him. They don't realize they're doing that. So now my response is generally taken as copping an attitude when I say "if I tell you, you can't repeat it. He's working and he needs to focus." So I instead said "he's working, I only use his name when I need something. Give us a second and I'm sure you'll hear it when you give our ticket back." And instead of just saying "up, follow" I said his name first.

(OMG, I just realized when re-reading this that it's annoying to have a story go so slow, but my day really is broken up in micro detail like this.)

It's Tuesday, so nobody is at the movies. Perfect. The handicapped seating is my ideal seat. I had plenty of room to park his bed, and would have plenty of room if it was a bad day and I needed my walker too. I think in the future I might ask in advance which movie screen it's displayed on, because we had to hoof it to the very last one, and I got winded. Charlie was not walking to my ideal, he was excited at the new smells and sounds, so my wrist is a little sore from correcting his gait and forcing him to slow into a perfect pace.

There was a cute cartoon before the movie started, and it featured an animated dog, complete with barking and whining. Charlie watched the whole thing, and whined when the dog tried to cheer his human up. No one will ever convince me that Charlie doesn't understand the concept of tv.

Charlie got up twice and alerted me that he wanted to leave, both times it was a loud, intense part of the movie. After a kiss on the head and a gentle command to lay down, he did perfectly. He even fell asleep for a good 20 minutes!

(I know it's dark. I wish I could have gotten better lighting!)

So, Charlie has seen his first movie in a theatre, and I had a date! Whoop whoop!

Random pictures

(This is one of my favorite affirmations. I look at it almost every day. I usually fight myself and try to push and keep pushing, even when I should rest, so it's a great reminder!)

Eli's

Beef/lamb schwarma, the gluten and gluten free option

Falafel plate (I ate one before I remembered to take a picture).

It was around ten bucks a person, but my falafel plate was cheaper than theirs. Worth every penny.

A quiet weekend

Blurred into a quiet Monday.

Charlie and I went to the library in town and handled job hunting and the like.

I really don't like our local library. There's hardly any book turn over, and I couldn't stop myself yesterday from taking a sign they had posted to them. It said: "when going threw our DVDs, we notced these were scratch. They are a dollar. We will not refund you."

O_O

So I wrote on a little note page: "We know these DVDs have been scratched. They're a great deal for only a dollar! No refunds will be issued on them."

They did not understand why my corrections to their grammar were being suggested. The librarian looked at the sign, at my note, back at the sign and said: "I'm assuming I'm showing ignorance here, but the sign doesn't look like it has anything wrong. I'll give your note to the head librarian."

I didn't have any reason to burn gas going 37 miles one way just to go to my favorite library and handle business, so I guess that's what I can expect.

When we got to our computer, a woman jumped up, grabbed her bag and half ran to the circulation desk. I heard her say "please just log me off! I can't stay near that!", which I assume "that" meant Charlie. I don't know why some people are so scared of him when they are strangers to us. I think his face always looks gentle and kind.

So that was our most eventful highlight. For today we plan on doing laundry and snuggling. <3
